From the major construction work outside of Misericordia Health Centre, it is obvious that big changes are underway. Once renovated, the complex will house expanded community programs, including the four flagship programs not offered anywhere else in Manitoba: the Buhler Eye Care Centre, Provincial Health Contact Centre, Sleep Disorder Centre and Urgent Care Centre, plus the Ambulatory Diagnostic Centre and a new, one-stop health care centre for seniors called PRIME.

You have decided it’s time to make a move from your current employer, but want to ensure your job search is kept a secret. Confidential job search is becoming even increasingly more difficult in the age of social media when privacy is scarce. If you don’t want your current employer to find out that you are looking for a new job, there are steps you can take to keep your search confidential. While you are better off to search for a job while you already have one, this can be a very stressful time. There are several questions that come to mind. Should you tell your boss? What about references? How much notice do I have to give? How you handle your departure from your current employer can be as important to your career as how you perform in the next one. Remember, it is not a crime to search for a new job, but how you conduct that search and the terms under which you leave will speak volumes about your professionalism and integrity. Here are some suggestions for stealth job hunting:

Across the province, there appears to be a renewed focus on creating healthier, safer workplaces. With this increased awareness, it is fitting that Safety Services Manitoba (SSM), the foremost safety services provider specializing in full-service programming in occupational safety, road safety and community safety, has put a renewed focus on strong leadership.

Workplace theft right under our noses

Every organization, regardless of its product or service, is vulnerable to employee theft, and it has been estimated that nearly 95 per cent of all companies have experienced some form of this activity.

If that statistic doesn’t shock you, this one should: 20 per cent of every dollar earned by a company is lost to employee theft. In other words, it takes $1.25 in new sales to recover from that theft.

Code of conduct guides employees around conflict

The public has been conditioned to think that conflict-of-interest issues only apply to politicians and other government officials held to high ethical standards. But the truth is that these issues are relevant to every workplace and affect all employers and employees.

Whenever an employee finds themselves in a situation where their interests are at odds with their allegiance to their employer, it is considered a conflict of interest. While most employees will thankfully never engage in bribery or other forms of illegal behaviour for their own personal gain, they may one day come to an ethical crossroads and not know whether to turn left or right because they don’t understand the principles of conflict of interest.
